Well not all the time. I went through some cheaper pulse welders but they didn't seem consistent (and they broke). In a move of financial irresponsibility I spent $5K on a Miller Invision 352 mpa with matching wire feeder. I really wanted to spend more and get the XMT 350 mpa but it didn't work out (something about food for the kids). Anyway, it welds so much easier and I weld aluminum with it. I improved a lot just by having a more stable welder. Pulse helps as well. Oddly, I bought a cheaper forney transformer type wire welder for my hog sheds and it turned out to weld really nice as well.

The question is do you need multiprocess or just mig? The miller 350p is really nice and is basically what I have in one box. I do have a cheaper tig welder that I'm still trying to figure out and it's possible I should have bought a really old miller to learn on.
