To the OP: I know some of what you’re talking about, and I’ve got respect for you overcoming adversity that you faced. You aren’t alone, I got to talking with a landlord one night and I threw an offhand comment about my upbringing. He broke down and told me horror stories of his own. I thought getting roughed up by hand was bad enough. His old man nailed him with a shovel and a claw hammer on separate occasions. He then told about staying at the neighbors and their dad was just as bad, chased after his son with a bullwhip until he stood still and took licks. This was just for questioning their dad’s opinion on how to operate. Both guys did end up taking over the family farms and I like to think they were more successful than the prior generation, if only just to spite them.
My old man was lazy, narcissistic, and abusive to put it nicely. Ended up buying him out before he got busted for being a chomo. Real neat deal after I had handed over mid five figures of life savings at age of seventeen with the agreement I would have a chance to run on the ground I was paying off for him. Experience cost money I guess, definitely taught me to watch my 6, no one else is going to.
To the original question: 1Not fertilizing, made some bs claim snow and lightning fertilized the ground. Funny how the same ground went from half a bale to the acre to averaging 2 bales per acre after fertilizing.
2Not tracking income and expenses. Showed on paper the enterprises he was pushing for show were actually losing a significant amount of money every year. “As long as there’s more coming in then going out, I don’t care where it comes from” is the answer I got. |
