Windom, MN | I used to feel that way too…haul them all to town because some years the sump plugs with pods/ they dry too much in the bin, they stick to the wall, etc. Back then we also had gravity wagons and a gas tandem to haul grain.
But now we have a semi and a processor somewhat close and their bid is always 40 cents or more than the elevator. Problem is during the fall you need more than 1 truck because you sit in line for 4 hours.
I got this bin from my neighbor 5 years ago and set it on concrete from an old feed bunker. Less than $5000 into it and has made me a lot more than that in basis changes and time savings in those 5 years. Some years I haul as soon as the corn is off like when basis narrows and it doesn’t make sense to roll a contract. Some they sit until spring if rolling does make sense. Then instead of waiting 4 hours to dump I may have to wait for a truck or 2. I still can’t hold all my beans on farm, but it’s nicer to sit in line 2-3 times instead of 10 or more. | |
