Amherst WI | You don't need to buy it to start out. Renting will cash flow you until you can.
I got started in 1997, and it took until 2009 to own a set of building and a few acres, in 2018 we bought our first chunk of farmland.
Unlike everywhere else in Agtalk land (other than SE Iowa Clay, Cliff) it hasn't been a straight line of prosperity from the bottom left to the top tight of the page since I started. There were years we lost our shirt, there were years we did really well, but we didn't have the ability or chance to buy land until almost 20 years into it.
How could someone start today? I don't know. But if there is a will there is a way and there seems to be more young farmer loans and stuff like that available now than there was when I started. Like everything else overhead is out of control and margins suck. | |
