Subject: Re: New Grain Bin.....floating pad.....any info???

First bin I had built the contractor built on a "floating pad". I was a lot younger at the time & the contractor was the largest bin builder in the area at the time so I figure he knew what he was doing. That was in 1973 & by 1979 we had a tornado go thru that shifted the bin & cracked the pad in several places. Also had a problem with rats tunneling under it. Same size bin right beside it built in 1977 with footer foundation didn't have any problems. We ended up having to dig completely around the bin & pour a footer on the outside of the pad. Haven't had any problems since but I did learn to never build a bin on a floating pad.

FWIW, I put up a 42'x7 ring (4") about 7 years ago & it took 65 yds of concrete. Footers are 4' deep & angle in over 1/2 way to the center. A little overkill IMO but I doubt if it ever causes any problems.
