E. Kansas | I've seen lots of basement walls that have bowed in over the years, walls were cracked a lot too when bowed in. This probably was due to the ground settling, expanding when wet and constantly pushing on the foundation. I've heard a foundation should have 3/4" washed gravel placed all around it, from the drain tile up to about 1 foot or so from the surface of the ground, and about 18 inches from the foundation outward. This is to allow the water to travel easily down to the drain tile. It is also there to shift as the ground expands, helping to minimize the force of the ground against the wall.
Is the gravel fill around the foundation necessary? If so, what are some recommendations for the gravel size and the space for it around the foundation?
