Brick ledge is 4 inches wide. If you use a 8 inch wide wall, 1/2 on the width is used to build on, the other is for the brick to sit on. If you are not going to brick then this does not apply to you. 4 inches is whats left to build on if you do decide to brick. Thats more than enough as treated 2x4 lumber gets bolted down to the top of the wall.
