Leesburg, Ohio | Nothing wrong with a double run conveyor. But:
Consider this, though: The cost of just a leg itself is probably not much greater than the cost of the double run conveyor itself.
Where a leg gets expensive is all the other stuff around it...pit, reclaims from bins, concrete, electrical.
You say you are thinking about putting in reclaims from the bins to the double run. Those will cost the same whether they dump into a leg or a double run.
The pit and wet bin cost will be the same either way. The concrete and electrical will be about the same.
The power required will be more for the double run than for the leg.
The leg will require guy anchors or a tower. But the double run will likely require support towers. And the guy anchors for the leg are effective and much cheaper than a tower.
The double run will require a system of rooftop conveyors to hit multiple bins. That means multiple drives and motors on the roofs. Leg downspouts are much cheaper and simpler.
So why in the world would spend the same $ as you would for a leg system, but not get the leg ???
OK, the leg will likely require a somewhat more expensive turnhead/distribution valve than just one simple k-valve that you mentioned.
But think of the versatility you will gain with the leg! Moving grain at will between bins, switching bins during harvest in a matter of seconds from the ground. Ability to pre-load an overhead to load out trucks rapidly. (This would be a major advantage for you with off-farm employment)
Seems to me you are planning a system that has almost all the components and cost, but without the key component: A Leg????
Yes, I think you are making things overly complex just to say you won't buy a leg. You are creating expenses with your design that a leg would not require.
Yes, any system is "absurdly expensive". But have you done the math on borrowing the $ and spreading the cost over your lifetime? A 30 year mortgage on it makes things work much easier. And a leg system should have no trouble lasting 30 years. A double run, not so long.
