Michigan | I posted some harvest pics yesterday and saw there were some questions on my semi.
It’s a 1995 Ford FT-900 with a 8.3 Cummins and Allison automatic. I’m pulling a 28’ Neville aluminum hopper trailer that holds just over 700 bushels (farmer full).
This truck was originally owned by the South Carolina forest department and had a flatbed on it they used to haul a small dozer. I moved the rear axles forward, shortened the frame, and added a fifth wheel plate.
It’s not going to pull like a 450 hp Pete but it gets the job done and costs less than a big new gravity wagon. We mostly do field to farm hauls of less than 5 miles. My longest haul is around 20 miles. We are pretty flat which really helps. It’s a huge improvement over a tandem truck in terms of ride and handling. The nice thing about the Allison is that nothing pulls out of a soft field better. Just mash your foot to the foot and go.
I did replace the bench seat with an air ride seat out of a small Freighliner. I also installed my own DIY air ride cab. This really helps with rough gravel roads.
So far parts availability has been great. Everything is either common truck parts or stuff from a Ford F150.
This truck worked so well for that I have put together two more-one is exactly the same and the other is a single axle with a 5.9 Cummins and a crazy 6.55 rear axle gearing (it was an airport fuel truck). That one has a top speed of 52 mph so we keep it close to home but it pulls a 24’ trailer and we get 500-550 bu on it.
