I remember going with Dad to deliver a straight truck load of beans at the elevator early one morning during the timeframe you referenced. We had a really good cafe in town back then, Dad asked if I’d like a pancake for breakfast. The cafe owner was working the cash register that morning, Dad reached in his pocket for some cash, a few soybeans were also in his hand, he jokingly asked the owner if he’s taking beans as payment.
