Subject: 8.3 Cummins massive blowby and crankcase pressure

West Central Alberta Coldest, wettest edge

Just over 9000 hours on original 8.3L Turbo Cummins.  Started having a lot of blow by while chopping silage, working hard.  A lot, as in a cloud visible from far away.  Shortly after started blowing the filler cap out, especially when cold.  Afraid it is going to blow out the front or rear main seals at this rate.

What is puzzling is that it is still running fine, starting excellent even when well below freezing such as today, not missing, not burning excessive oil.  I have heard of turbo seals allowing exhaust gas in, causing blowby, could that be the case?

Probably a cheap enough engine to do an in frame, but it is not one of my favourite jobs, so looking for some faint hope that it could be something else.  I suppose I could disconnect the turbo drain line and put it into a bucket and see if there is exhaust gas in it?

I have a good used turbo from 8.3 on a 1680 Case IH combine that we replaced only to find it was not the problem. $100 plus shipping. 701 851 0399

No such thing as an inframe. No sleeves in that engine.

8.3 have sleeves. The 5.9 and 6.7 do not have sleeves.

Yes, do your turbo drain line test before jumping to conclusions. If you come up blank on that test, put your hand under the blowby tube and feel for pulses. If pulses are present, you have a weak cylinder. Possibly a cracked piston or scored rings.

We had an 8.3l with a little blowby and we put bg engine performance restorer in the oil right before the oil change. It cleaned the oil sludge under and around the piston rings, runs better and has no blowby now. Might be something to try
