The "uprite air cleaner", as they called it, was a factory option to help suck in cleaner air to keep your air filter from plugging so often. Pretty sure it could be field installed at a later date if you really wanted it. Without it, the air was drawn in through the side screens. SHARP 4430 btw

+1 on the sharp 4430. Nothing like a well cared for original.

The air cleaner pipe above the hood was a option on all the 4430s,most of them had the option out here in Kansas.

I always wondered that too. We had a 4240 with a short air stack and the other one didn't have one. I've also noticed that the stacks on a 4440 are opposite of a 4430.

This is true. It was to add fuel capacity to the 40 series. They stuck the filter n front of the cab and put a bigger fuel tank in.the 30 series needed a ginger fuel tank because a full day of hard work wouldn't get far with out refueling. A lot of the 30 series had an aux fuel tank over the weights or saddle tanks that went underneath.

Have a 1975 4430 with double stacks--so it must have been an option-so stacked is better???

What is your SN. A lot of the late ones had 8 bolt front hubs, yours look like 6. Still could get 6 I think, but more 8's. Also late ones had the larger diameter rear axles. Do a search on here, it has been discussed a lot

That is just a different hub, I have a 1976 that I changed over because I was having hub trouble carrying saddle tanks.

It just depended on how it was ordered when new.

SW Minnesota
The upright air stack on ALL of the 30 series tractors was an option from day one...

EXCEPT - sometime partway thru the 30 series, the location of the air cleaner on the 4630 was changed from between the fuel tank and radiator to above the engine. So the location of the air stack in turn was changed from in front of the muffler to behind the muffler. So someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm guessing from that point on, all 4630's had an air stack.

We had a '75 4430 single stack.

Bought new.

Also had small axles. 6 row floating W&A hippers were hell on bearings. Didn't live here long.

All the 4630s had the air cleaner on top of the motor. They just had a pipe run under the hood to have the air cleaner stack in front of the the muffler. In either 74 or 75 they just put the air cleaner stack in back of the muffler and it was standard equipment then probably about the same time Quad Range and the Hi back cloth seat came out . My uncle had a early 1974 4630 that had the air stack in front and the early style seat.

Cleveland, MS. Own small farm near Booneville, MS

Don't remember the year of our 4630 (I'm sure it was an early model) but it did not have an air stack at all. It did have the old style seat but covered in brown instead of yellow and it had the syncro transmission.

The last half of the 1977 build the 4430's had some of the same features as the 4440, wider flanges on the outboard planetary's, larger axle.

I have personally seen a 4430 with 3 5/8 axles which didn't make sense to me as first 78 4440 had 3 3/8 axles getting back to air stack if we are talking about collector type the tractors with air cleaner under the hood are preferred, for a using tractor clean air is a must and I prefer the upright stack.
