Would you put a bale bed on a late model half ton truck or would it be too much. Would haul 2 900 lb bales no feeder.

I've never owned a bale bed, but if you have to ask, you already
know the answer.

seems a bit much to ask of a half ton, what happens when you get a good buy on 1600 lb bales?
Most of us tend to push our equipment to the max-ever seen a manure spreader just filled
to the level :)

Make sure you buy the biggest cube feeder you can find. That way when you hit bumps it will bow the frame back down.

There is usually someone here that tries it and it doesn't ever seem to work out too well for them. To be honest I don't know of an installer around here that will put one on a half ton and provide any warranty.

if frame is the same, witch sounds like it could be.
Buy they air bags to put under the bed and I think you will be ok.

Texas/New Mexico Stateline

Been using a Toyota Tundra for several years now.  This was before I put air bags on it.  Put about 15-20 psi in the bags, and it will sit level now.  GVRW in the book says #1500 capacity in the bed.  I figure one bale at a time isn't too hard on it.  But a person needs to not do anything stupid like crossing ditches or driving too fast.

Generally stockpile the hay with tractor and side dump trailer right were we feed it.  So I don't have to do more than move it couple hundred feet.

Sure beats using a tractor.

I sure wouldn't. Have broken frames on two older one ton trucks and broke the frame on the bale bed itself too. Granted we used them a lot and were probably rough on them at times. If I'm spending the money for the bed in gonna put it on a decent truck.

I've had two bale beds on 3/4 tons and have had to have springs added to both to hold the beds up. You could add springs but not sure about if the frame would be heavy enough. Who knows they may be just as heavy. I think you would have lots of axle bearing problems.

Heck the 3/4 tons now days barely handle a bale bed with two bales loaded. About the frame, someone is gonna have to crawl under some 1/2, 3/4, 1 tons now, I'm curious to know.

I know this my 3/4 truck is taller because it sits above the frame and the 1/2 seem to hide the frame. The is chevy. I know the fords are not the same a 150 is not a super duty.

Id have to get the google search going on new 1/2 tons, but in the old days 1/2 ton Chevys had c-clip axles and 3/4 tons had bolt in axles. If a guy breaks a bolt in axle life goes on... c-clip axle breaks and the tire/wheel/axle walks out.

I'd have to disagree with you partly. Not all 3/4 ton GM had bolt in axles. My brother had a '93 that had the C-clip. Axle broke and whole thing slid out. Know my '98 K2500 and '01 K2500HD both have bolt ins, but I think Dad's 97 K2500 has C-clip too. Not sure but think there is a GVWR difference on the c-clip vs bolt in.

Yes they made some light 3/4 tons and 6 hole hubs. 1/2 tons with 3/4 badges. Full floater axle vs. semi float axles.

I have a 93 f250 that had a bale bed on it before I bought it the truck has factory overloads it road on the overloads with the bale bed. Now it has a plain flatbed and even hooked to a 20 ft stock trailer empty it's not on overloads. I had a dodge diesel with a hydra bed and it made the truck weigh like 8-9000 empty. So I guess what I'm sayin is it's a load before you put a ton of hay on it much less the two hundred pounds of stuff a guy just has to have in the truck.

IMO, you are asking too much of a half ton. Never had one, but I always thought a bale bed would be ideal to put on a surplus chassis cab REA/telephone pickup.

No way would I put on half ton. I have broke frame on 3 3/4 tons with just bale spike and 5x5 bales. Frames sometimes are same size but different thickness or grade. I would only go with heavy 3/4 or 1 ton for bale bed, they are heavy by themselves without a bale.
