VT
Want to control lice and mites with a pour on. Options range from generic ivermectin for $50 to cydectin for $250. Looking for opinions, experiences and advice. Thanks in advance.

I have been using the generic for many years. Has worked very well.

I don't know about effectiveness on external parasites, but I prefer Cydectin (Moxidectin) over Ivermectin for controlling internal parasites in sheep. They are both in the same class, but a different active ingredient, so it's not just a generic vs. brand name comparison. As far as I know there's not a generic Moxidectin product on the market yet though.

yes we are using cydectin also-it works-have seen failures with generic-I truly think when a animal has a great hair coat things just work better overall-spending $2 more per animal might return you more then you can see-hair coats on cattle is very important in my feeding manua;l

Generic ivermectin works just fine for lice/mites/flies for me. For some reason my vet says use name brand ivomec injectible for internals, and he likes cydectin for a pour on.

Those are two pretty different products. I would suggest using trade name over generic.

I use generic ivermectin in May and cydectin in October on my cows. The last time I had a feces sample checked they were both still working on internals.

For lice control, some generics do not have sustained control for 21 days to kill newly hatched lice eggs. You get what you pay for.

My son asked his professor at ATI {division of Ohio State} what the difference was between 1% ivomectin in a generic compared to 1% Ivomec. He said only the oil is different that is used for the carrier. The name brand would last longer if cattle were in an outside environment. The active drug was the same in both. Our cattle are under roof. We use the cheap stuff and seems to work well.

The lice deal can be tricky. You pay the extra cash for cydectin or dect and do not have any problems this year.....come to find out your neighbor didn't do ANYTHING AT ALL and he doesn't have any problems either. Next year you do the same thing and your cows are ate up with lice??? The lice deal is different from year to year. Where I'm at....use generic while being prepared for more than one treatment. I have been disappointed in all of the available pour ons from time to time. If you wait until they start rubbing (what I usually do) you're way behind, I think.. maybe?

For lice control am using permethrin pouron to kill current lice population and also apply a cheap permethrin fly tag for long term control. Have been doing this for years on my old throwaway cows and have had good lice control all winter.
