JD 7200 planter Martin 15" spading wheel just nips the bottom of the rubber insecticide diffuser. This is after shimming to get proper clearance away form the row. Some rows hit a couple others are very close. The first 2 pics are how the original bander/bracket fastens up underneath the cast tail piece. The last 2 show how the spader nips the diffuser. Anyone else ever run into this and how did you solve it ? I have to have the insecticide and diffuser. I see Shoup has a replacement that looks to be plastic and a bit narrower but what do they mean by slope compensating ? Will narrowing up the insecticide band slightly be an issue ? They don't give an overall length either. Anyone have a Shoup one for reference ? nw illinois | Von, We just installed the white banders that are shown in the Shoup catalog. They were designed by Larry Conrad the inventor of the SmartBox Meter. They are standard on all KZ planters and have better diffusers in the banders to make a more even band, even on hillsides. Mine are on a 1770 NT and I'm a liitle concerned about the clearance also. I think that when the planter is in the ground the wheels will come up and away from the bander.

Can you get any sort of measurements off of yours ? I'm thinking I might be able to bend the tab with the bolt hole in my first picture to tilt the diffuser slightly forward which will help some but if the actual Shoup diffuser was shorter that would help too. Is the 1770 mounting the same? I'd like to know the distance from the bottom of the diffuser up to the square tube it passes through ? Also how does the Shoup diffuser attach to the bracket ? Is is just the clear tube and hose clamp that provides upwards tension on the diffuser ? 7000's had a clip that passed through and retained them somehow. My planter has the slots for the clips but there were none included when I bought the insecticide boxes and added this to my planter.

northeastern Ohio | Von, I had a 7200 with Martins and it also had the insecticide with the difusers. They did not touch each other on mine. But mine may have been a different year than yours. If I recall correctly, there are some shims that go on the shafts to set the spaders out so that they are not too close to the seed trench. I think the instructions for the spaders told the measurement. If they are set too close, they can disturb the seed (and may very well hit the diffusers). It has been several years since I did this, and my memory may be getting fuzzy, but this is what I would check. nw illinois | Von, Try http://atb-banders.com Larry would be glad to talk to you. He also sells the bander that you saw in the shoup catalog for the same money, after all he came up with the design. Jeff Edited by pigfarmerj 3/27/2009 21:06

Looks like yours might have been a little later with different insecticide shut off. Mine is a very early 7200 as it still has 7000 cable style markers. Your picture appears to be twin 13" spader's and looks like the 3 bolt aluminum hub needed to get the offset for the short 7200 closing wheel bolt. I bought the 4 bolt cast hub which included the steel spacer plate. I've also got several opener disk shims on the closing wheel bolt before the hub went on to. Basically I'm out as far as I can go and still get a full nut on the threads. I've got 2 rows that are rubbing the others barely miss. I need to do something to get a little more clearance somehow. Martin pamphlet says 1-7/8" at narrowest point between a spader and rubber tire. Somehow I've got recurring visions of the spader flipping all the corn out of the row

Iowa | Von, Been there, done that. Just bend the tab as you had mentioned and you should be fine. I don't like to see the spike 1 7/8" from center of furrow to inside edge of spike. I would rather be down in the 1 1/2" from center of trench to inside edge of spike narrowest point. If you have them set this way there is no way that they can disturb seeds unless you are on a very tight contour or you plant around corners. DavidM
