mid Illinois | Are any of the Cummins 855 big cam 2, 3, 4, or 88 engines ones to stay away from? I have heard that the big cam 4, and 88 engines were the ones to stay away from, due to low flow cooling or other problems. Whats you opinion? Reason I ask is because sometimes you can buy a good running old truck with an 855 cummins cheap, and wanted to know if some of these engines you should stay away from. I'm only familiar with a big cam 1.

the water nitrate electrolysis level makes the biggest difference not treated liners can get pit holes in less than a year want to, need to test with the strips from the same company that made the treatment AD-4 from fleetguard needs to get checked with fleetguard strips

Northeast Louisiana | We've had trucks with BC II, III, and IV engines. No real problems with any of them. We did have a BC III overhauled, due to a head gasket failure which dumped coolant into a cylindar and galled a piston, but that engine had a lot of hours on it and was due a good overhaul. Agree about the need to keep the coolant treated to prevent electrolysis. Edited by Deadduck 3/14/2009 11:37

Woodstock,New Brunswick.Canada | A good Cummins mechanic can pretty tell by looking at the motor but for everybody else you will have to check the model and engine serial number which is on a stamped metal plate which is located on the front drivers side of the motor ahead of the air compressor. If the plate is missing ,look for a flat raised area at the very back of the block under the head ,about 3/4 inch wide and 2-3 inches long with numbers stamped in it.on the drivers side above the starter. This is the engine serial number, take it to any Cummins parts place and they can look it up and tell you every thing about the motor.
