Subject: New Grain Dryer

I am looking for opinions on a new grain dryer. Currently using a couple of larger Shivvers with a Level Dry, but need something bigger yet. I know there are a lot of people that don't like Shivvers, but we like some things about them. To us, the biggest negative is they are not really upgradable. Looking at different continous flows, screenless, tower or a Shivvers with 3 50hp fans on a 48' bin. Which is the best overall system in terms of efficiency, durability, consistent grain moisture, least damage, etc?

I recently upgraded dryers from a double stack 2314 GSI to a Sukup mixed flow 2410. So far I am overly impressed with the capacity of my mixed flow. I bought the expandable option (I can add more on top)but after getting the capacity I currently am I am not sure I will ever need it. Excellent grain quality and definitely using less LP than my GSI. No screens to clean either. Some say they are a dirty dryer but I really can’t complain about that.

On another note we custom farm 1,000 acres for a client who in 2015 put up a 48’ shivvers system. We call it a “****ters”! To this day it hasn’t ever ran 12 hours without shutting down from some malfunction. Biggest disappointment I have ever seen. It has 2 50 hp fans and 3 floor augers. I personally think a level dry is a must in a 48’ bin because no spreader in the world will ever spread the corn even enough. Trying to spread even with a spreader results in corn coming out of roof vents and making a mess. If using a level dry you have to have a wet bin and at that point go to a CF. With three floor sweeps we have had it pinned numerous times from unwanted shutdowns. Major PITA!

Do what works for you but I would highly recommend a mixed flow!

I have been looking at the Sukup Mixed Flow. Are there any drawbacks or anything you don't like?

First season so others may have more experience than myself. I really like the drag conveyor unload. It is hooked together with the metering rolls so the faster the metering rolls turn the faster the conveyor unloads and it runs really smooth. I have the gravity fill option and it also works flawless and eliminates a motor. On the initial fill you will have a coffee can of corn on the ground and inside the plenums from it ricocheting as it fills but after that it isn’t that messy.

I also ordered it with 5’ tall legs to get the fall I needed to my dry leg and the tall legs are really nice for cleaning up and working around it.

Some order taller cooling screens and I would advise against doing that from my limited experience. I added the expandable option without the 2’ taller screens. I run the loovers wide open and sometimes wish I had them closed a little more to recapture more heat but I want to unload above ambient (20-35 degrees)to take the last .5-.75 point out in the bin.

Email is good if I can be of any help. Others did me the favor last winter.

Also put in a new 2410 sukup mixed flow, unfortunately don't think I will get to use it this fall as corn is still 31-33 hand shelled planning on waiting and hoping we get an open winter and can harvest some time towards spring.

I ve been drying 28% and it’s chugging through it pretty well. I feel your pain with the wet grain but around here field loss would out weigh my drying cost big time.

Dry corn with a Sukup screen CF dryer, DMC Grain Flow ( Shivers type dryer) and a Top Dry. Corn quality is superior out of the Grain Flow and Top Dry vs CF dryer. Most efficient would be the Top Dry

Wouldn't want to rely on one dryer as the only way to to dry corn. If something happens to one of our drying systems don't have to completely shut down. Top Dry control panel went on the fritz this fall and was down several days to get a new one. Several years ago CF dryer caught on fire ad burnt a bunch of wiring and was down several days before got it back to operating.

Have a 24210 NECO and love it.

I like the ability to turn fans and blowers on or off to adjust to my drying needs.

We are on our 7th season with a Meyer 1400 tower dryer. We absolutely love it. Just 2 days ago we went from 28% to 19 then back up to 24 in one day and the outgoing moisture fluctuated maybe half a point. Plus the quantum controller is bulletproof. Pretty sure the quantum runs off 80s computer technology but it does not glitch or crash ever.

And one bonus perk, ours is a 1400 meaning it does 1400 bushels/hr drying 5 points while cooling the exiting grain. If you choose to do full heat it’ll do 2000 an hour. They way undersell the capacity of it. It’s done 1800 taking off 5 points while cooling for us. We love the thing.

SuperB gets my vote. I'm not saying they're better than anything else they're just what I'm familiar with. They're simple to operate and Brock has finally came out with an updated controller to replace the ancient quantum.

Haven't used it yet, still sitting here clean and shinny, was planning on drying beans but they dried down on there own and are currently at 13.5, corn on the other hand is NOT drying down, hand shell on Monday was still 31-33 depending on variety/field doesn't seem to matter much on variety or planting date unless you planted a very early variety.
