Subject: 2011 Silverado doesn't want to shift out of park

Illinois
2011 Chevy Silverado began not wanting to shift out of park. I researched it a bit on Google and the shift interlock consists of; the brake pedal switch, a shift lock solenoid , and a cable to the transmission as possible problems. I don't think its the brake pedal switch because the shift lever will stay locked in park when you give a steady pull to shift it, but it you push the shift lever the opposite direction, then try to shift the lever it releases. So would it be a weak solenoid, or would the shift cable be the cause ? TIA

The brake switch will keep the hand lever locked if it's bad.

If the brake lights are on, wouldn't that show that the brake switch is working correctly ?

I just had same issue with our 2010. It was brake pedal switch. It also had traction control and stability track lights come on. Cruises control would not work consistently. Slamming the brake pedal down would make a temporary fix. Changing the switch was very simple. Good luck

45 miles south spingfield il.
I think brake switch was 24 dollars for the "good" one and about 19 for the cheaper one. I put the "good" one on and about 4-5 months later fix it again with the cheaper one. Second one has lasted for almost a year. Looks like another problem with new parts and new trucks- yes I still consider a 2011 truck new. LOL

Gas or Diesel? Pretty common to have TCM got out in 2011 trucks.

On a Jeep, the brake light can work and the and the switch can still be the problem with the interlock.  I think my brake switch had 8 wires running to it.

Sounds like a possibly weak solenoid to me. Patrick
