Subject: CAT 3208 Fuel Problems

Ottawa . Ca

Have a 3208 engine in an 'ol NH Tr85 that is bleeding off fuel when it sits, and while running there is a bunch of fuel dumping thru the injector pump vent lines. There are 3 lines coming off it that dump on the front side of the engine. Can anyone explain how the return line back to the fuel tank fitting on the top of inj pump works? Is there an orifice in it that can be plugged. Seems to be a gizmo threaded into the return side of the fitting that is tough to get anything thru it.

that tee handle screw is only for bleeding filters and fuel system and only dumps fuel on ground, not back to the tank. Open that only when using that junk hand pump. You have a governor seal leaking air and fuel, will have to take to fuel shop to fix, kind of a problem for all 3208 cats.

Between Omaha and Des Moines, 7 miles South of I80

The 3 plastic drain lines, that go and dump, up front, by the oil cooler area are:

A. Vent and drain line for shutoff solenoid housing = will leak fuel IF the lip seal or gasket in the housing (under "top cover") has failed.

B. Drain line at Fuel Return anti-siphon valve and orifice (with tee handle) = there to drain fuel when a person wants to bleed the fuel system, so fuel doesn't end up in the "valley" of that V8 engine.

C. Drain line or Weep hole vent, for fuel transfer pump (that is part of the very front of the fuel injection pump = gear driven pump on main drive shaft)  =the reason for this line is that there is a "dead-air" space between the lip seal of the fuel transfer pump and the oil lip seal to the very front drive gear (in geartrain) That dead-air space and vent line allows any leaking fuel, from a failed fuel transfer pump lip seal, to leak diesel fuel externally and NOT allow it to be pumped into the front geartrain, and dilute the oil and maybe cause an expensive failure; like ruined crankshaft bearings.

About the STEEL fuel return line leaving that Fuel Return anti-siphon valve and orifice = that is your typical fuel return line = should be open, all the way to the fuel tank, so fuel can "drain back" easily after it leaves the orifice right at that #4 connection(part of that whole unit with the "tee handle").

Note: "Tee handle" needs to be closed(tightened down snuggly), when running = only time to open it, is when a person is "bleeding air" out of the fuel system. = that is the only time fuel should flow out that one particular plastic drain line.

Ok Thanks for the info. I will take one line off at a time to narrow it down.

Will it hurt to run it like that if I get a longer hose to dump fuel into a jug, just to keep it out of the engine area till I get it fixed?

West Central Alberta Coldest, wettest edge

To add to what has already been said, you can remove the governor housing from the pump without removing the pump.  But I can't remember if you can change the leaking seal that way.  I do know that when our 3208 was leaking from the line by the fuel shut off, I plugged the vent line and just ran it as if that housing was supposed to be wet, worked fine for a long time.
