NE Iowa | Our setup has got to be on the upper end for # of row units per tractor Hp - 16 row planter behind 125Hp 4430 = .128. Lots of guys around here pulling 12 rows with at least 150Hp (0.08 ratio). A few huge guys pulling 48row with 450Hp (.107). Our planter is a 12r 7100 bar with pivots each moved out 1 row (putting 8 rows on center section) and each wing lengthened by 1 row. Is a little challenging in transport, as the wings on 7100s don't go true vertical - planter is pretty wide going down the road. But, once in the field, it is a dream to operate. Same tractor will be pulling a 15" 16row 7000 planter in a few weeks planting beans. Roseau, MN | I pull a 24r30" with a 145hp 8630 ford set at 145hp. I don't have hills so I can pull it at 6mph at about 3/4 throttle no problem, the only time it gets harry is if I get caught in a wet spot. Kind of funny how much you can pull when you are not trying to run a bunch of hydraulic motors. I'm not going to argue that a new planter isn't better, but what ever happened to KISS. Near-north Ontario, French River | We pull a kinze 2600 12x30 , dry and liquid fert , NO-till with 110hp. Get along fine, but 20hp more would be nice . I'm curious as to why you don't run duals on the tractor, would really aid in stability when transporting.

We currently pull a 15 row 20" White with a 2-155 White, handles it like there's nothing back there.
We've pulled the same planter in the past no tilling beans with a 2-105 White, it handled it ok but you definitely knew it was back there.

SW Iowa | We used to pull a 30' Crustbuster with 44 rows and 1 3/4 bushel per foot with a 130 hp 8030 Allis, but it didn't want any more. If it was wet going, it objected.

I dunno. We pull a 16 row 30" with a 7120 magnum 2wd. Around 165 hp? Handles it fine untill it gets soft.

SW Ontario | I have a neighbour who used to pull a 8 row 30 with dry fertilizer with a 2130...67hp. Having the extra openers and weight makes a huge difference. I have a 16r30 1770 with dry fertilizer and extensions set up for no till...holds 8000lbs of dry. Used to pull it with a 7810 with ease. Seems guys run with a lot more power on their planter than I did, but wet holes will do that I guess. The 7810 with MFWD was barley heavy enough for road travel. Different strokes...

East Central Nebraska | I got a MT535B challenger MFWA that has about 115hp. I pull a 8 row 30" 6100 planter and a 20'drill with 13 JD 7000 units on it. I got the CVT at 1700 RPM and 5.2 MPH. In the hill and clay, she doesn't complain. Dad use to plant with a 180 Allis gas tractor (somewhere around 80 HP) and had a 8 row 30" International 58 planter with runners. It'd burn the gas for sure. But gas was cheap back then.

Wallis, TX | Son bought a Farmall H that the original owner never took the planter off. 4R wide with a sprayer in tow, pto pump as well. The farmer used this rig until he retired in the late 70's. An H is about 28 hp so the ratio is .14?

Southern Indiana | I know a guy that pulls a 12/23 Kinze 3600 with a mx120. That would be .191 and thats engine hp not pto. He told me that he did this and I couldn't believe him until I saw it. I would hate to get in a pinch with this thing. btw we have hills too but not mountains.

Eastern Iowa | I have been told many different things over the years. Currently pulling a 6 row with a 130 hp 2wd, so I have plenty of power, but not always, surprisingly. This farm is very hilly and some tough soils. I have told my dealer I would like to go to a 12 row next year and upgrade the tractor with it. He has a 7520 IVT MFWD he said would work, but at 125 hp, I sorta doubt it.

Pulled an 8 row 30" 58 for quite a few years with an IH 460. Pretty efficient little rig, but, the tractor had about what it wanted in soft worked ground.

SW Ohio | I pull 15 row bean planter (1780) with 4010. It is turboed with duals and weights. Maybe 105 HP? That is 7 HP per row. Corn at 8 rows would be 13. Land rolls a bit, it's the wet places that slow me down. DIVIDE HP BY ROWS. 125 / 12 = 10.4 HP per row 125 / 16 = 7.8125 HP per row 150 / 12 = 12.5 HP per row 450 / 48 = 9.375 You are on the low end of those examples for beans but still better powered than I am. Good Luck, Dave

NW Iowa | Pulled a 12-30" 6100 White with a 4430 (140 hp maybe?) with and 11 row splitter for a couple years. You could definately tell that was back there.

Western Ky. | Pulled an IH 56 6-30 with a 50 John Deere (less than 40 hp). Pulled it in fifth gear @ 7mph. Once we planted 120 acres of beans in one day 5 am to 12pm moving short hops between 3 farms.
