Subject: 3208 Cat, anybody add a turbo?

Dad was asking me yesterday to post a question on here for y'all.

Looking at alot of trucks, see most are 3208's like our F8000 is, non-turbo. I know the motor specs are slightly different, but was curious if anyone has added a turbo to a 3208. Looking at keeping this truck for awhile as its a low maintenance grain truck and adding a newer truck possibly, love the truck as it always starts like a top never needs plugged in, burns 1/2qt of oil a year but nothing terrible.

I figured, and told him, i'd assume more people would swap an entire 3208T motor in from a TR-98 NH combine or similar as i believe they were 3208's, then you'd just need to plumb some oil lines and smaller things. Truck is just running a little bit short on power when the pup trailer is loaded down and we're hauling 700+ with it. Not sure if turning the fuel screw would help a little or not.

Being a V8 it's a little tricky. I suppose if you could find the right turbo and all the pricy cat manifold parts it could be done. However, there are 3208T's available as complete engines that would possibly be a cheaper option. I bought one for $2500 a few years ago and they may be cheaper now.

Turning the fuel screw will help the engine wear much quicker, here that is one of the big drawbacks of the 3208...The fuel pump should have been in the oil pan, engine would have lasted much longer...If you look around, may be long ways off, but you can find 3208s with turbo for 500 to $1000...You may have to buy a donor machine and part it out to get your price down to that, but there are loads of them available.

Drop 100 bu off the load and spend your money on another truck. Take a long time to justify the aggravation and expense of either plan on an old truck with a 3208 in it. JMHO.

Back in the day when White made their 4-XXX series tractors several had turbos put on them, some one on each side. They didn't last long. Those tractors came with 3208NA engines.

planning on another much bigger truck, just trying to get a little more "umph" out of this one as my dad loves how easy it is to drive only being a 5+2.

If I remember hearing correctly a 3208NA and a 3208T are two different animals. I believe the rings or pistons are different, but I could be mistaken. I was always told that the NA version wouldn't handle the turbo.

3208NA was rated at 210hp, 3208T was rated at 225hp, some later models were 250hp.... Not a whole lot of difference.

The turbo'ed 3208s have a larger oiling system, piston cooling oil nozzles, and a roller camshaft that the others do not have. The block is different.

We have a 2-180 White with the 3208. We pulled the pump and had it gone through. Set it at 275 horse and it dyno'd right at that also. Pretty stout tractor. Its non turbo so I'd say if you have good cooling capacity you should be able to get 275-300 out of it with just a pump redo.

Ebertfarms, the TR98's did not have the 3208's. The TR95's and earlier TR96's had the turboed 3208, up until 1990, then they came out with the ford engine, then the genesis.

Gosh I thought I was the only one that thinks a 5+2 is a lot easier to drive than these other transmissions. I could drive the dickens out of Dad's 75 chevy, not so much these Ford tandems that Son has brought home. The truck with the rock bed and a 350 Cummins ain't too bad, get her up to speed and let the foot feed do the shifting. Like that Jake too, drives the townies nuts. LOL

Consider putting a propane kit on it to get up to speed. Much easier and won't hurt the motor.

Dave,

I wouldn't do it.

Decades ago we put twin turbo's on a White 4-210 tractor that had a 3208 engine. A couple of years later we had major engine problems. We replaced it with a 3208T engine. We learned that there are internal differences between these engines. The 3208T is designed to handle the turbo's and our original 3208 was not.

We actually still have this tractor. We don't use it much, but it's available if we need an extra tractor, or if one of the principle tractors breaks down. Every time I think of selling it or trading it in, no one is willing to give me what I think it's worth. About all anyone is willing to give me for it is what a month's payment would be on a new tractor it's size. It'll probably remain on the farm till it dies or I do, whichever comes first.
