North Central Ohio, across the Corn belt ! | duishay - 11/26/2010 21:18 When people talk about spreading ams are they referring to sprayable ammonium sulfate or some other product? When you refer to AMS here you are talking about sprayable ammonium sulfate. for dry blends, Dry AMS . Yes. there are several grades available. CPS offers a quality product used by many Vegetable growers. Production hay and pasture applications, and for general crops. there are also those that formulate, and mix a Liquid, spray able blend.

ammonium sulfate used as a fertilizer is a different product than the sprayable ammonium sulfate. The fertilizer product mostly likely is a granular product. When I think of AMS fertilizer, the name Honeywell comes to mind:

I don't mean to hijack the thread, but I've got a follow up question. I've found found some 'ammonium sulfate' locally (haven't went to look at it) which I'm pretty sure is the granular (dry) stuff to be run through my spreader. I'd like to find some sprayable ammonium sulfate, but nobody knows what I'm talking about? I can get liquid 'water conditioners' of various brands (I currently use Quest) that seems to contain a bit of 'AMS' but nobody has bags of AMS to mix myself (which I understand is cheaper with more N and S); the liquids contain no N or S to speak of. Where do I get, or how do I ask for, sprayable AMS? Or will the granular ammonium sulfate mix in my sprayer?

How much do you need? It can always be shipped LTL. Want to try a bag or two UPS would be ok. Think it ran about 9 bucks a bag around here last year. Tim

Central NE | Cole, the link HawkenCougar linked to also had some information that came from from KState regarding research conducted on different forms of sprayable AMS and competitive products : http://www.apfcorp.net/products/s-sul_tips.html Also, I'm sure this place could ship you a pallet of these AMS bags : http://www.unitedsuppliers.com/Home/tabid/37/Default.aspx

Since AMS needs to be dissolved in the spray water before adding glyphosate (so it can tie up hardness ions) I dissolve it a day ahead. I cut the top off a plastic 55 gallon drum and marked it at 10 gallon increments on the outside, up to 40 gallons. I put in 40 gallons of water for a sack of sprayable AMS which has multiple sources in Iowa, then dump in the AMS. It falls to the bottom. I used to stir with a 1x6 as a paddle, but later I built a plastic pipe with a right angle at the bottom and a cap with a small hole. I put an air hose coupling on the top and I apply 100 psi air with this submerged and turned to stir the tank. I get a nearly clear solution in a couple minutes and its stay so its in solution, no suspension. On my sprayer I put a valve to a garden hose fitting on the side of the pump suction line and a shut off valve between there and the bottom of the tank. To inhale AMS solution or glyphosate, I put a piece of plastic garden hose with a plastic fitting (my home made sprayer is all plastic plumbing), close off the tank valve and open the hose valve and let it inhale the needed amount. No spills that way. 51 pounds of AMS in 40 gallons of water is fairly close to saturation, it won't take much more with 60 degree water. Spreading that over 24 acres I get a bit more than 2 pounds of AMS per acre and it seems to work well. When using 10 gallons of water per acre, I used 10 gallons of solution for each 60 gallons of sprayer tank fill. The air agitation has made it easy, the induction cone on bigger sprayers sometimes doesn't agitate nearly as well and you get undissolved crystals of AMS that plug the nozzles. Fertilizer grade has to be tougher to dissove and probably have more junk in it. I've used a minnow net to scoop off the dead bugs when I've left the barrel to sit (inside) for a day or two. W. central IL. | Sprayable AMS should be available thru your dealer's chemical distributor (Helena, United Suppliers, Simplot, etc.). Granular AMS is marked thru fertilizer wholesalers. AMS is AMS, analysis is 21-0-0-24S. Sprayable grade is smaller particle size and cleaner. Also used in greenhouse drip irrigation systems.

Cole, Any CHS outlet should have bagged sprayable grade AMS...........that and little surfactant is all I ever use with Glyphosate,,,,,,,all the other stuff is simply over priced crap in my opinion........If you cant find any look up AG WISE in KREMLIN, MONTANA......talk to Steve........he will get you some.... I also spin on FERT GRADE 21-0-0-24 for my wheat as I have extremely high PH and I am basically making my own GYPSUM with the Sulfate from the AMS combined with our high soil calcium carbonate.....happy with results...........
