Ontario | Had some alfalfa cows were wasting more than I liked, so I figured may as well start 2024 doing something stupid lol. Had a box of knives from when I sold the hay bine so put one on each paddle and tried it out. Seemed to work pretty well just gotta figure out how to quit it from wrapping as bad. I'd probably put more knives on. Double or triple what you put on. Might help keep it from wrapping. Just a thought.

Feeding in a bunk is different I know, but for feeding in the field I always felt like I needed to keep the leaf on the alfalfa and the grain on the cereals or too much of the best part is lost.

SE NC | There’s several spreaders running around us with worn out paddles and sickle sections to add teeth back to them.

Ontario | joethefarmer75 - 1/1/2024 21:15 My cows would think "wow, what a good job of bedding us!" I was worried about that lol, it was more of a trial than anything as I'm moving into a different barn with a feed alley instead of bale rings. So far they seem to prefer this to the hay i have in the ring. As for the adding more knives i think I'm gonna give it a shot just to see what happens.

Kind of my thoughts also, if you do want to do it how about feeding under an electric wire some how so they cannot lay in it. Other thing that i have found when feeding bales in rings is that a 3-4 day feeding interval is about right. I also like to have 2 kinds of hay so that they concentrate on the type they like first instead of starting all the bales on the same day, right now I have about 60 head 6-7 balers at a time and it lasts about 3 days. When rain was forecast over Christmas I fed only 4 bales at a time so that they did not have too many bales opened up to the rain at one time. Other thing is not all feeders are the same I have found that a toller feeder about 4 1/2 feet tall cuts waste to a point, seems like they do not pull as much out if they do not hit the top of their neck on the top rail when/if they raise their head to chew. I also as a rule also walk out once per day and fork in the dry hay that is pulled out, really helps to cut waste. Mud is the worst it can really spoil hay quickly when bale grazing.

West Central IA | Yup, they would think this as they walk on top of it and eat and poop at the same time.

Nebraska | Looks like it just beat off all the leaves and made it even more stemmy.
