Subject: metal tempering

W.C. Mo.
Or in this case, "untempering"
Have a helper that I lined up to clean out several blind, threaded holes.  Had everything to clean out the holes with oil, die, etc and showed him how I wanted it done.  After I left he got the bright idea to put the die in a drill chuck and speed up the process.  Ran the die down the first hole, hit bottom and twisted the die off down in the hole.
My question is : how the hell do I get it out.  Tried tapping it with a small punch, small needle nose pliers, and a few other attempts.  Figure I will have to drill it out but do not believe I have a bit to cut the die.
Is there any way to heat it to soften the die and then after it cools drill it out.

Edit.. these 1/4" dia holes are in a cast steel hub and believe aprox 3/4 inch of die is broke off.
