Subject: Drilled well and pitless adapter question

Madison Co. Virginia
I replaced a submersible pump today, and evidently I bumped the pitless adapter enough to crack a rusty iron pipe that was attached to it on the outside of the well casing. This iron pipe ran for about one foot, before transitioning into the typical black poly pipe that we usually use underground.

Is that iron pipe necessary for any reason? Can I just run poly pipe directly to a barbed/threaded adapter, and into the pitless adapter? Doing so would definitely cut out the rust issue that I experienced.

I'm assuming I can't simply unscrew the iron pipe from the brass pitless adapter, because of corrosion. I'll likely have to replace the whole thing. Do you have any tips or tricks for removing and installing a pitless adapter without dropping stuff down the well? I've never done this step of the process before at all.
