Subject: keyboard/video over ethernet or fiber

Central, IA
Anybody have any experience with KVM over IP or fiber?

My office is a few hundred feet from the shop. I'm ready for a computer in the shop, don't want the issue of having two computers with whatever I want on the other one.

I can use remote desktop to get back to the office computer, but there is resolution and lag issues with that. I'm wondering if I can just extend my monitor/keyboard from my office computer to the shop.

I'm thinking the last time I looked at KVM converters, it was not suggested to not run the traffic through a network switch, but direct with an ethernet cable. I have extra strands of single mode fiber between the two buildings, so I could theoretically get a 10gb link between the two devices.

Now come's the downside. The first search appears the boxes to do this are in the $1000's of dollars.

Any body ever try such a thing?
