southern MN | Before it freezes hard, got a few pics of my oddball cover crop patch.
As I’ve mentioned I grow 10-20 acres of oats, plant cheap, alfalfa, clover, and some turnips along with the oats.
Swath and combine the oats, sell off the straw, a neighbor comes in and blades in 6000 gallons or so of hog manure, and the light oats and the covers regrow.
They did pretty good this year. This is one of my lighter fields, it is more yellow clay hills than the heavy ground I typically have. It hasn’t had manure in decades. Due to the wet weather I didn’t get any P or K put on this oats, it had a very light application of urea when it was shin high.
You can see in the first picture, he didn’t get hog manure right out to the edge. The turnips are smaller, and the oats is very much smaller, where no manure went. Can sure see the difference.
I really don’t know what I prove with this, but it’s fun to do something different.
