Subject: Milo has me baffled

Eastern Shore of MD
First off, I've never claimed to have milo figured out but this year has me stumped.

We began harvesting dryland milo last week and test weight was low; 51-53. We've seen this in years past with, what we always assumed was, weather patterns, especially dry spells. We jumped into our only irrigated field and the TW was significantly lower, 45. This was between two varities that we have grown for years with good results (DynaGro M71GB01, DeKalb 28-05). We fertigated the milo three times, all prior to heading with approx 25# N/ac per pass which was something that we had not done before.

I'm really stumped as to why the test weight is that much lower in the irrigated field. There are no sugarcane aphids in this region; not sure on other pests. The seeds look almost like the got smooshed, like a roller ran them over but didn't crush them.

Any thoughts?? Thanks!
