Subject: Wrapping 5x6 marginal moisture bales

Driftless SW Wisconsin

I did some round baling yesterday where the baler moisture indicator fluctuated between about 18 and 25% moisture. As suggested in a thread below I checked the bales with a handheld meter which confirmed the same range when measured in different places in the bale. It is too good hay to waste or take a chance on so I decided to wrap all of them.

Hoping for dry bales to put in the shed, I made most of them 5 x 6 ft diameter, rather than the 5x5 ft I usually make for wrapping. I've never wrapped a 6 ft diameter bale before, even though my Anderson says it will inline wrap up to 6 ft diameter bales. Well, they are right. But just barely fit. Actually it did a nice job of wrapping these big bales.

Being marginal moisture I was able to handle these bales with a 3000 lb track loader. If they were more in the 40-50% range even the 3000 lb loader would not have handled them safely. Here is a picture from this morning.
