Subject: Top Dressing AMS Vs Urea

I am debating making a change to our fertilizer program. Currently we apply fall NPK up to about 100-130 lbs actual N. We then use liquid ATS as a carrier for Pre Herbicide and this has been our sulfur source. We get 15 lbs sulfur in corn on beans and 30 lbs in corn on corn with this program. We follow that with a Urea/Agrotain top dress of roughly 60 lbs actual N when corn is about knee high to get up to 160-200 lbs actual N. Top dressing Urea makes me nervous every year but we always seem to get a timely rain and have avoided disaster thus far.

I am debating scrapping the Liquid ATS as a carrier and top dressing 240# per acre of straight AMS. The benefit to this would be stable nitrogen and a big shot of Sulfur and everything I have been reading and hearing is that we are under applying Sulfur.

The overall cost of the two programs would be roughly the same in the end.

Thoughts??
