Subject: Roll lock cylinder repair

SE Nebraska
I have a JD 4930 with a roll.lock cylinder that is leaking. I got the seal repair kit. The ends of the rods have holes that it appears for using a spanner wrench. I drove the rod in and see a wire. The rod turns relatively easy when the rod is extended but hard when I drove the rod in and saw the wire. Do I go ahead and turn the rod and feed it out the hole or find the gap and work it over the shoulder and a tapered slope so the rod and can be removed?
