Subject: Nurse crop for Alfalfa

Holy Cross, IA
Been pondering what does everyone else use besides oats as a nurse crop for spring planted alfalfa? Doesn't seem like the oats has the vigor and volume like it did years ago. Also tired of it laying over flat 2 days before we cut it every year and smothering the alfalfa below. Has anyone used sorghum sudan? That really tons up and stands really well. Any experience is appreciated.

Edited to add that a nurse crop is 100% necessary as the ground we farm is no where close to being considered level.
