Subject: reducing livestock methane

CNY
The fake meat post made me remember this interesting read. Whether or not you believe methane from livestock is an environmental concern, there are a significant number of influential people that do. I just read a short feature about researchers that have been working on this, some for as many as ten years. They have experimented with diet changes and feed additives and have found something that seems to work. A microalgae seaweed, Asparagopsis taxiformis, has been shown to dramatically reduce animal methane. In artificial rumens methane was almost eliminated when added at 2% of the"diet". Fed to sheep, "a little" in the diet reduced methane by 85%. In California where there is a goal to reduce livestock methane by 40%, UC Davis fed dairy cows at 1% D.M. and reduced methane 50% with no effect on the milk. UC is now working on the best way to produce the algae for livestock feed.

If nothing else this could take some of the criticism away from the livestock haters. What it will cost was not mentioned.
