Subject: rye: to bale or not to bale?

Nebraska, The land of corn and cattle

Have a field of cereal rye that was innerseeded into corn last fall, had planned on grazing it but never got there. Thinking about either cutting it and then raking and baling or cutting it, rake it and have the neighbor come and chop it. Theres 75 acres of it so there will be quite a bit of whatever we do.

Its about knee high now and the stalks are just a little shorter, plus when we rake it were bound to get quite a bit of the trash on the ground as well, will we still have enough moisture in it to make ryelage or would we be better off just making dry hay? Kind of leaning towards the hay because its easier to handle or sell if we choose to. This is new to use so were not sure what to do, plan is to plant beans after we cut it so having it chopped would get us in the field a few days sooner.

What would the rye hay be worth compared to decent alfalfa? We have plenty of hay but were thinking that we could use it as filler and sell some more alfalfa next winter. We just background our own calves and have about 100 mama cows.
