Subject: Not using tailgate on truck

Eaton, Ohio
I recently bought a pretty nice pickup truck. 2013 F-250. Although I prefer not to use a tailgate, I left it on because I wanted to keep it looking nice. Then I dropped something heavy on it and bent it so I pulled it off so I could keep working. Then I got along so much better because I can hook up to trailers so much easier (both gooseneck and bumper hitch), also loading stuff with a forklift/skidloader is so much easier.
I figured I would straighten the tailgate and just put it on if I feel I need it for something specific. Someone told me that not having a tailgate is bad for the bed sides, I'm assuming he means that the tailgate adds support to the sides and keeps them from leaning in or out.
Does anyone have any knowledge or experience to say if this is true or not? I have read that having a tailgate surprisingly helps with fuel mileage, but I assume it is a minimal amount that I'm not worried about too much.
