Subject: grain drill with the coulters before the openers...differences?

ESW ND
Now I'm mainly talking about great plains, that's the only one,for the most part that I've seen it on. I've noticed 2 types, the ones that have the separate coulter cart before the drill itself and then the ones where the coulter is attached on the same drill right ahead of the double disk openers. Now what is the advantage of either one and the disadvantage of either one? From what I can see through pictures, is that you will have more weight on the coulters with the ones that are directly attached to the drill versus the cart. Do they have to be used all that time? Can they be adjusted separately from the openers? Not used at all when it's used in a tillage situation? Can that type even be used in previously tilled ground? I know you can keep the coulter type cart up and just use the drill. Any other pros/cons you guys can shed some light on would sure help.
I will be using it in both tillage and non tilled fields, so that's why I'm asking.
