Subject: Propionic Acid for preserving sorghum Sudan Grass.

West Central Ohio
Hello everyone, how well would propionic acid do at preserving this type of hay?
We baled it last year and couldn't get the hay dry enough and it ended up molding. we left it on the ground for a week in September. We fed the hay right away so there was no major loss. We are looking at planting it on 15 acres mixed with field peas and soybeans. This mixture we've read yields upwards of 15 tons per acre. Ideally we would pay to have it wrapped but we have a 5X6 baler and nobody that we know of has an inline wrapper in Preble county Ohio has an inline wrapper. We have a neighbor who might bale and wrap it but that would cost 15 bucks a bale and we would be at the mercy of his schedule and the rain.
We are thinking of setting up a moisture probe in the baler and then setting up to apply the buffered propionic acid. At 10-15 tons per acre that would be a lot of moldy bales for my brood herd to eat this coming winter.
Will this work, what are the pros and cons of doing this? Thanks in advance!
