Subject: Crop Rotation

Hey all, I have 135 acres that I am trying to get the most forage out of as possible. I need 35 to 40 acres to stay in corn for grain. I like to grow half of what I need for grain and with corn prices so low I'll buy the other half.

So my big question is, what's my most efficient rotation for the remaining 95-100 acres? Roughly 60-70 acres will feed heifers, the rest will feed dry cows (which quality for heifers and dry cows can be pretty similar) I was thinking about trying to squeak in 30-35 acres of high quality alfalfa that I could use to feed the milking cows.

We do forage sorghum now which we've had good luck with. Has anyone had good luck with sorghum sedan grass? Is alfalfa a better option? Just looking for ideas and whether or not following forage sorghum with a sorghum sedan would work or not. Sorghum sudan (like alfalfa) would allow us to have a crop to harvest in middle of summer without having to wait til fall with forage sorghum

Thanks in advance for the help!

FWIW, we're located in NE Iowa.
