Subject: What do you use for pigweed control in alfalfa?

Rome, KS
Seems it's becoming more of an issue every year. First couple years of a stand is acceptable as long as alfalfa is planted at 20+ lbs. / acre. After that stand starts to thin and competition decreases and here comes the pigweeds. Alfalfa will not outcompete pigweed here in summertime with my usual dry weather followed by 2" rain. Alfalfa is slow to get started again being partially dormant by dry weather but pigweeds just take off and grow and soon be above alfalfa canopy. Can take the next cutting but will outgrow alfalfa again after that.

Any herbicides that seem reliable? Winter dormancy herbicides wear out about the time pigweeds start here. Have tried paraquat after a cutting but seems to stunt the alfalfa enough that it doesn't produce another cutting after that.

Southern southcentral KS dryland 35" rainfall 90-100 degree high temps during June through September.

Added: Local chem rep. suggested Warrant or Prowl after 2nd cutting but didn't seem to excited about it.

Added again: Have played with different fertility treatments but haven't been successfull. Maybe that is the right direction, but I haven't found the combination and alfalfa is a distant 7th on the crop priority list to most everyone around here so finding someone local that is knowledgeable is about nonexistent.
