Subject: Compaction Thoughts

There have been many studies done and articles written on the effects of Land Rollers on the land. Many of these studies were performed by various University Agricultural Departments. Some concentrated the studies on potential higher crop yield and long-term effects of soil profiles. Others have been done researching the yield of crops. All of us know that a higher crop yield equates to higher profits per acre and may justify the purchase of a Land Roller.
There are many benefits to rolling fields. One of the main benefits of rolling fields is to push down rocks so that during harvest those rocks would not be ingested into the combine head, baler or forage harvester’s head, causing costly damage. A repair of this sort could potentially be in the tens of thousands of dollars.
Another benefit that I want to explore and should be of interest to agricultural minded people and one that has not been considered, ‘Erosion of Top Soil’. Preventing and slowing down erosion is a hidden benefit of rolling a field between plantings to keep the soil profile as low as possible and keep the fines of the soil compacted and together. By doing this it creates a lower profile so that the wind cannot pick up the fines and blow them away.

What are your thoughts on Top Soil Erosion as a major concern for long term field use.
