Subject: House help - moderating the temperature

I live in London Ontario, basically midway between Detroit and Toronto.  Get hot (85' F and humid) summer days, and cold (20' F and wind chill) days in the winter.

My house is a 2006 build.  The front of my house faces the west, or slightly south west.  So I get a the afternoon sun on my garage and big front room above the garage.  In the summer, it gets hot in the garage and above it.  Not stupidly hot, but hotter then the east part of my house that doesn't see the sun.

I was thinking about a few things like putting insulation on my garage door to help level the temperature swings, and putting film on the windows.  Is this a good idea?

For the windows, what kind of window film should I use?  Do I place it on the inside or outside?

For the garage, my sides aren't insulated, but will insulation on the door still help a little?

Just looking for some logical help...or to get confused more.
