Subject: Short corn but big ears? Southern Mn area

Central MN
So was talking to dad who is doing construction work down by the Marshal, Mn area this week and said the corn is short , like tassels around eye level but still have really nice big long ears on them. He said there would be about half as much trash to deal and fight with in the fall. 30 inch rows. Late 90 early 100 day maturity. Same brands we plant, except 88-92 day. Is it a maturity thing or fertilizer thing or what causes plants to get so tall? Same issue with beans getting too tall as well.?
