Subject: Oat, pea cover crop in corn

Tabor MN aka God's Country
Wondering what anyone's thoughts or experiences have been with it. I'm new to cover crops and there isn't a lot of it done here as we usually have such a cold spring and short season but here's what I am planning on doing. I'm gonna spread 1/2 to 3/4 bushels/ acre of an oat-pea mix. Will be approximately 80% oats, 20% peas. Will also spread all my N needs then plant corn. The oats and peas should come up before the corn and then spray out the cover at 4-6 inches. Do you think I will see a yield penalty or any other problems. Anyone ever tried this? Some sugar beet farmers do it around here to help protect the small plants and stop wind erosion.
