Subject: (PICS) JD 6619 engine oil pump gear won't clear crank journal...

west Tennessee
Here is a 6619 engine out of our 850 jd dozer. overhauled the engine about a year ago as it had several thousand hours on it. everything new, even put a new oil pump. she ran great , for about 40 hours then she through the oil pump gear through the oil pan!!!! luckily my dad heard it do it and killed the engine about the time he saw oil coming out. so we pulled the engine back out and went to deere to get another oil pump !!!! when we installed oil pump number two we noticed the gear on new oil pump was rubbing the journal on the end of the crank. so we used the thicker thrust washers on the crank to aid in clearance, and still stayed in tolerance on the end play of the crank. well the gear still rubbed, so carried the oil pump back to deere and exchanged as it had to be defective we thought. put on oil pump number 3. same problem. Had deere mechanic look at it, and he said all we could do is remove a little "meat" from the backside of the gear and some on the outside of the crankshaft journal as well so we could get clearance. we did this and put her all together and she ran great for 2 or 3 hundred hours, then spun a rod bearing and ruined the crankshaft.

this all happened a year ago, and we went and bought a Komatsu D61 PX - 12. The engine has been sittin in the shop for a year now.

so now we bought a polished inspected crank, and are building her back, but we have the same problem......... the darn gear on the oil pump is rubbing the journal on the crankshaft. the gear and shaft are tapered so you cant "shim" it out. what in the world do we do? any ideas on the problem? who to contact? similar expieriences? did deere somehow change the spec on these pumps?
