Subject: beef cow economics

Death comes to us all. Life's but a walking shadow
A few posts ago MacDonald got a good thread going on beef cattle and we heard some different voices which was little refreshing. It is clear that there is a revolution ongoing in the cattle business which I for one don't begin to understand.
We all have heard about the decline in the beef cow herd so I thought I would check into it some and so put together a chart which shows what the USDA thinks is going on with the herd. It doesn't look that bad to me but the feeder calf price sure seems to indicate otherwise.
It is pretty obvious that fat cattle prices are no longer set in the open market. I would like to know how that gets done now. Anyone who does this care to comment. Does the price get set before or just as the cattle get on feed?
