Subject: 4020 head gasket blown, any suggestions?

West Central Alberta Coldest, wettest edge

Neighbor bought a 4020 diesel (round fenders, 24 volt, I assume it is an early SN)  auction sale special, and after only a few hours use, it blew out the head gasket at the rear of the head.  It is bulging out of both sides, big compression leak, and oil blowing out.  It looks like it was just recently repaired, fresh paint on the head etc.  One assumes that there was something more seriously wrong(warped, cracked or eroded deck or head?) and it was slapped together to get it to the sale.  Were head gaskets a common issue on 4020's?  It seems like every 150+ HP deere tractor before the 8000's around here has had head troubles, but I've not heard of troubles with the 4020's?
The tractor isn't apart yet, but assuming the deck isn't damaged, and the head was planed and inspected last time, are there any tricks of the trade that might have been missed by the last mechanic?  Such as retorque, wet/dry gasket, shims, liner heights etc?
