Subject: Using wheat screenings in rations

NC Indiana
Dad showed up w/ a wagon load of wheat screening (2/3 wheat, 1/3 chaff) the other day, and now I have to figure out how to feed it. How do you guys use this in rations? Feeding P2 cows on irrigated corn stalks, steers, and replacement heifers, Blk Angus based. Other feed stuff include 130' x 9' bag of corn silage - 7.9% protein, 58% moisture, TDN in the 70's, a small pile of corn silage (ran out of bag), alfalfa/orchard baleage - 1st, 4th, 5th cutting and '11 3rd, alfalfa/orchard hay - 3rd, irrigated corn stalk bales, alfalfa/orchard/foxtail/weed hay - 1st cutting off of new planting, and corn. DDG's, soyhulls, and other by-products locally. Have a Penta 3010 vert TMR.

I'm thinking the wheat needs to go to the steers, but not sure. Think just hay (free choice or processed) and silage w/ mineral to the heifers and cows.

Also, we pulled the black plastic off of the pile and found the top 8-12" to be black, wet, and cover w/ fungi. Do we scrap the top off down to the good looking stuff and spread the top on other stalks, or do we worry about seperating it? Never had a pile before.

Thanks!
