Subject: Help understanding Feeding out cattle.

Elk Mound WI

I need some help to understand feeding out cattle.  Please correct me, so that I can understand better.
Looking at local sale barns for current prices of cattle.
These are Hostlein.  I got the 100 bushel number from a post a few days back.
400lb feeder $415
100 bushel of corn $700
Total cost to raise $1,115
1400 lb steer $1,470
So that is $355 towards buildings, equipment, death loss, land, and labor.
Can you feed a 400lb calf just corn to put on 1000lbs.  Is this the best way or can you feed forage or corn silage to decrease the cost to finish.  Any info that you can provide me with would be great.  Please let me know if I am looking at this wrong and give me better numbers to use to help me understand the profits in feeding out cattle.
