Subject: CaseIh 7140 Rear Main Seal

Serena Il, Center of the Universe

Strip NH3 the other day for about five hours.  The engine used about 3 qts of oil.  Had this happen before and it was the rear main seal.  Shop forman said to pull the drain plug from the housing behind the engine if oil comes out seal is gone.  Easy enough but there are two plugs.  I am assuming its the front plug.  Dark oil came out.The front timing gear is dry and the exhaust is clean.

Ok,  the seal was replaced less than 300 hrs ago.  I believe one of three things happened:

1.  The seal was installed improperly.

2.  The seal was defective

3.  There is something else going on ie a bad crankshaft or bearing.

Any ideas guys?  I am about to fix the seal and sell the tractor.
