Subject: Lack of drainage may be paying off this year...

I scouted a 120 acre field planted 4/18 and took some pics of the more stressed areas and the pretty good. It's pioneer 1319 or 1184 and it's leaning over. We just got 3" of rain on the 14th and the ground was still wet on the 16th with 90 degree heat. We also got some very strong wind that knocked over corn in another field, but I think the corn in the field I just scouted leaned over all by itself (dang, forgot the full rate of insecticide to go along the $300 traited corn).

At any rate I think I'm looking at 150bpa potential if we get a little more rain - it's off the pace, but not a disaster. I also have another field where the corn is 'delayed' - it's short and just starting to push out an ear and silks in some spots and fully pollenated and filling kernals in others. The heavy rain should bring that along, but they will be small ears. One thing I wonder is that once the corn plant goes into reproductive mode it shuts down in other areas (not much root or stalk growth) and I'm wondering if the short plants will grow a little taller because it's behind or will it just put the energy into grain fill?
